The Years They Took Is Coming Soon — and This Story Still Gets Under My Skin
There are stories you write to understand something. And then there are stories that write themselves into you — the ones that stay uncomfortable long after you've typed the last sentence. The Years They Took is that kind of book for me.
I've been working on this novel for longer than I want to admit. Not because the plot was difficult to structure, or the characters refused to cooperate — but because the questions at its core don't have clean answers. What does captivity do to a person's sense of self? How does memory protect us, and how does it betray us? When does survival start to look like something else entirely?
It's a dark psychological thriller about memory, captivity, trauma — but those words feel too tidy. The book lives in the space between what happened and what the mind is willing to hold.
I write psychological thrillers because I'm interested in the architecture of the human mind under pressure. Not the dramatic collapse — the quiet, incremental ways a person reconfigures themselves in order to keep going. That process is rarely heroic. It's often strange. Sometimes it's frightening. That's what I wanted to put on the page.
The release is close now. There's a particular feeling that comes with this stage — not quite relief, not quite dread. Something in between. You've lived with a story so long that you've stopped being able to see it clearly, and soon it will belong to readers entirely. That's the deal. You make the thing, and then you let it go.
If you want to follow along as the release approaches — the process, the thinking behind the work, the stranger parts of author life — this is where I write about all of it.
The Years They Took is coming. I think you'll find it unsettling in the right ways.
